چکیده

We present an application to the full ASDEX upgrade edge plasma of a novel method for 2D fluid modeling, including for the first time a realistic representation of the First Wall. Two independent edge plasma codes are coupled to this purpose: B2 (with a detailed physics content but intrinsic geometrical limitations due to the 5-point computational scheme) for the inner region of the Scrape-Off Layer (the so-called near SOL) and ASPOEL (with simplified physics content but larger geometrical flexibility thanks to the Control Volume Finite Element CVFE scheme) for the outer region (the far SOL). The two codes share information across an interface magnetic surface, representing the outer boundary for B2 and the inner boundary for ASPOEL. An iterative procedure is developed, ensuring the continuity of profiles and fluxes at the interface. The radial profiles of density and temperature computed at the outboard mid-plane across the complete SOL, up to the first wall, are in good agreement with experimental data. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Generation of blobs and holes in the edge of the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak

The intermittent character of turbulent transport is investigated with Langmuir probes in the scrape-off layer (SOL) and across the separatrix of ASDEX Upgrade Ohmic discharges. Radial profiles of plasma parameters are in reasonable agreement with results from other diagnostics. The probability density functions of ion-saturation current fluctuations exhibit a parabolic relation between skewnes...

ICRF wave field measurements in the presence of scrape off layer turbulence on the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak (invited).

A new array of B-dot probes was installed on ASDEX Upgrade. The purpose of the new diagnostic is to study Ion Cyclotron Range-off Frequencies (ICRF) wave field distributions in the evanescent scrape-off layer (SOL) plasma region on the low field side of ASDEX Upgrade. The vacuum measurements (no gas, BT = 0 T) reveal ICRF wave field measurements consistent with the profiles expected from the ne...

Convective transport suppression in the scrape-off layer using ion cyclotron resonance heating on the ASDEX Upgrade Tokamak.

Turbulence properties in the scrape-off layer (SOL) in the presence of ion cyclotron frequency heating (ICRH) are compared to instances where it is absent. The discharges are all in a high-confinement mode (H-mode) regime. During ICRH, the SOL plasma density increases whereas turbulence large-scale and convective structures are shown to be suppressed. The probability distribution function is th...

SOL parallel momentum loss in ASDEX Upgrade and comparison with SOLPS

An H-mode database of ASDEX Upgrade plasmas with improved diagnostics for a variety of different plasma conditions has been analysed to study the momentum removal in the Scrape-Off Layer (SOL). A strong reduction, up to a factor of 100, of the electron pressure is observed close to the separatrix. Sets of L-mode and H-mode like plasma simulations with the SOLPS5.0 code package have supported th...

Effects of outer top gas injection on ICRF coupling in ASDEX Upgrade: towards modelling of ITER gas injection

The influence of outer top gas injection on the scrape-off layer (SOL) density and ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) coupling has been studied in ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) L-mode plasmas for the first time. The three-dimensional (3D) edge plasma fluid and neutral transport code EMC3-EIRENE is used to simulate the SOL plasma density, and the 3D wave code RAPLICASOL is used to compute the ICRF co...
